With 3D becoming big business in the cinema world, it is only a matter of time before 3D technology finds its way into the home. This is especially true following the huge success of 3D films like Avatar as they are released as DVD movies.
Most of us probably remember in the early 1980s when 3D films were first introduced, and to be honest they were not great. However with new computer generated imagery these new releases seem to do what we expected back then.
Recently I took my little boy to watch the new 3D Christmas Carol film animation, with Jim Carey playing Scrooge, at one of the Odeon Imax screens. It was excellent, with 3D images leaping off the screen and my Son trying to grab them!
The quality was very impressive, and I honestly believe that 3D movies are here to stay, rather than fade away like in the past.
3D Blu-Ray Players
3D blu-ray players are about to arrive in the shops, as the main manufacturers develop the technology. The Blu Ray Disc Association has recently revealed the specification for this technology. The new codec for the 3D technology on Blu Ray is called Multiview Video Coding or MVC for short.
The 3D Blu Ray discs will also need to hold about 50% more data for them to work and they also have to be backwards compatible to 2D technology.
The good news is that a few Blu Ray Players should be compatible with the 3D technology as long as they can be updated. For example, it has been confirmed that the Sony PS3 will be able to be updated to play 3D Blu Ray. This also gives creditablility to the PS4 having this feature from launch, albeit not until around 2012.
What type of TV to get the best quality isn’t clear at present, but we do expect new products with advanced 3D spec to be introduced.
Recently Panasonic announced plans to bring out a special range of 3D ready TVs and Samsung a special 3D Blu Ray Player, so like we said, 3D Blu-Ray Players are just around the corner.
