The name Blu-Ray comes from the colour of the laser that these disc players use to read the information on the discs. Unsurprisingly, it is blue. Its a simple catchy name that is easily recognised, but is it Blue or Blu? Well the correct name is Blu-Ray Disc Player but to be frank, it doesn’t really matter how you spell it, although, in time, we’ll probably forget where the name came from.
What is Blu-Ray?
Many television manufacturers since 1998 started to make TVs that were capable of displaying in HD or High Definition. What this means is that the screen has the ability to display in a higher resolution so the quality of the image is much crisper and clearer. Another way of looking at it is if you were to paint a picture with a very fat paint brush and then with a brush that was much smaller, the picture painted with the finer brush would be much clearer. What Blue Ray players do is take advantage of this high definition technology and allow the viewer to watch the disc recording with a much better image.
So a disc can play an image in high definaition it does need to be able to store more information. We won’t bore you with the finer details but Blu ray discs do just that and need the speacial blue ray inside to be able to read them. It is because of this films on blu ray are a few pounds more expensive than normal DVD but we think that extra quality is worth it.
Older films are also starting to appear on blu ray discs so viewers can enjoy their favourite films all over again. Another bonus is that even if you buy a blu ray player it will almost certainly play your old DVD collection anyway.
