The Sony BDP-S770 blu ray player looks to be one of the new top of the range models in the Sony blu-ray player range. Previously with any Sony blu ray player around this price we would have recommended to buy a PS3. However what we have with this model is finally a unit that can change just that.

One of the main reasons the Sony BDP-770 blu ray player is so good is because of the picture quality it can deliver. Taking some of the technology from the top of the range Sony BDP-5000 this model has HD Reality Enhancer, and Super Bit Mapping technology. These features help to make sure that images are smooth and deliver a much crisper picture. Sony have also included their Deep Colour and x.v.Colour technology to bring a more colourful picture to the screen.

Yes the Sony PS3 delivers the full high definition 1080p picture and 24 frames per second speed, but with these extra features the BDP-770 is leaps ahead. This model even includes the award winning XrossMediaBar menu system found on the PS3. As an aside, it will be interesting to see what Sony decide to put into the forthcoming PS4 console.

Other Sony Blu Ray players offer picture enhancing features but these are the first ones we noticed that make a big different. Also if you have any standard DVD films you want to watch the Sony BDP-S770 has the up scaling technology built in as well. With a super fast start up you won’t be sat around wasting time for this player to start working either. This means the player can be up and running in up to 6 seconds far quicker than some other brands.

Sony 3D Blu Ray Player

To take full advantage of the 3D feature of this Sony player you will need to have a compatible 3D TV, such as the new Sony Bravia 3D. Unlike old 3D technology that simply used 2 different colours, the BDP-S770 uses Polarisation which puts two images onto the same screen with a special filter.

Sony WiFi Player

BD-Live is becoming a pretty standard feature that is on most blu ray players, a feature that lets you view extra content online. This could be things such as interviews with the actors, trailers, behind the scenes footage, or even alternate endings. However to activate this feature you would need to plug your player into a broadband line, which might be nowhere near your TV. The Sony BDP-S770 though has built in WiFi so can do all of this wirelessly without the need for cables.

As well as the picture the sound quality on this Sony blu ray player is excellent as well. As well as full Dolby HD and DTS-HD Master encoding there is 7.1 channel high definition sound via HDMI. There is even a headphone socket on the front which is an unusual but very useful feature.

There is a USB socket on the front of the Sony BDP-S770 if you want to view things such as photos on your TV. The look and feel of the player is very sturdy and it has the standard glossy Sony finish most of there range has. Overall this is a fantastic player, and one of the first top of the range models that is definitely worth it.
